Map showing the Billingham Tidy Up area covered

Fields and Woodland between St Michaels' Secondary School & Wolviston Back Lane

This large area has been visited three times in October 2022 and also twice in May 2022.  It is a mixture of hedges, woods and open fields, and many parts of the area contained bramble branches, dense twigs or branched close to ground level and a considerable ground deposit of dead leaves.  Please read on to find out more about the effort made to clear this area. See also the Our Work webpage on this site which discusses our collaborations with other litter picking groups from nearby towns.

     What we did

This area is a mixture of hedges, woods and open fields, and many parts of the area contain bramble branches, dense twigs or branched close to ground level and a considerable ground deposit of dead leaves.  That posed challenges for litter pickers as many items of rubbish can be difficult to access, and scratches or tears to clothing are a risk.

We made our first two visits in May 2022 and three further visits in October 2022.

Parts of the area had become blighted with litter that was buried deep out of view and whilst it may have been out of sight for many years, it certainly wasn’t out of mind as far as we were concerned.  We only became aware of some of it by the noise it made when trampled on.  Often rubbish was partly embedded in the soil and couldn’t just be picked up from the ground and dropped into a waste sack in a second or two.

The east to south western tip of the site was a wooded area bounded by a secondary school, and was heavily littered with drinks cans, plastic bottles, crisp packets, sweet wrappers, various items of clothing, discarded food containers and other food or drink packaging.

In total we removed 111 bags of rubbish - 32 in May and 79 in October.

However we also removed handbags, mattresses, tyres, a baby walker, Bike wheels, Microwave, pendant light , Wood , Plastic pipe, traffic cone,  a couch cushion and kitchen worktops.  These had to be carried over 100 yards in some cases to the litter removal collection points.
